Unit 1 Theme: The Circus!

This month, our dance studio is transforming into The Circus! 🎪 Through playful imagination and creative movement, our little dancers will begin learning the foundations of ballet and tap while building confidence in the classroom.

During these first few weeks, our focus is helping dancers feel comfortable with classroom routines, making new friends, and becoming more independent. We'll practice listening skills, following directions, taking turns, and celebrating every success—big and small!

In class, dancers will explore:

🩰 Beginning ballet positions and movement vocabulary

👞 Tap shoe sounds (toe, heel, and whole foot)

🎵 Rhythm, musicality, and creative movement

🤹 Animal walks, circus adventures, and imaginative games

💗 Confidence, independence, and classroom manners

💕 This Month's Goal

Our goal is helping every child leave class feeling successful, confident, and excited to come back next week.

💖 Tiny Steps at Home: Ask Me About...

  • 🎪 My favorite circus animal.

  • 👞 The toe and heel of my tap shoes.

  • 🩰 Walking on the "tightrope."

  • 👏 Clapping rhythms.

  • ⭐ My favorite part of dance class.

Unit 1 Theme: The Royal Welcome!

Welcome to Level 2! This month we're welcoming dancers back to the studio and building on the confidence and independence they developed in Level 1. Our goal is to establish strong classroom routines while introducing new ballet and tap skills in a fun and encouraging environment.

In tap, dancers will review heel drops, toe drops, heel steps, and shuffles while beginning to combine them into longer rhythm patterns.

In ballet, dancers will review first and second position while being introduced to third, fourth, and fifth positions. They'll practice pliés, tendus, battements, échappés, bourrées, balances, and expressive port de bras through imaginative music and movement with the help of our special ballet "Twinkle Bear"!

Throughout the month, dancers will strengthen coordination, balance, musicality, memory, and classroom independence while learning to remember longer movement sequences and transition confidently between activities.

💕 This Month, Look for Growth In:

  • Following classroom routines independently

  • Remembering longer movement combinations

  • Stronger balance and posture

  • Listening for musical cues

  • Increased confidence and classroom leadership

💖 Tiny Steps at Home: Ask Me About...

  • 🩰 My ballet positions.

  • 👞 The toe, heel, and whole foot of my tap shoe.

  • 🎵 How I can make my tap sounds soft, loud, slow, or fast.

  • ⭐ My favorite way to travel across the room.

  • 👑 How I am becoming a more independent dancer!

Ballet • Tap • Jazz | Weeks 1–4

We’re starting the year by building strong foundations across all three styles! During Unit 1, dancers are learning classroom routines, reviewing foundational skills, and beginning to connect movement with music. Most importantly, we're helping them feel confident, capable, and excited to dance!

🩰 Ballet

We’re getting back into our ballet routine with lots of movement around the room, a little barre work, and some fun traveling steps! Dancers will revisit their pliés and tendus, practice jumping and balancing, and start putting their skills together in a short combination. We’re focusing on beautiful posture, control, and moving confidently through the space.

👞 Tap

Tap is all about making music with our feet! Dancers will jump right into our fun Zero to Hero warm-up, playing with shuffles, rhythms, and step-claps before taking our sounds across the floor. We'll begin putting those rhythms into our Bring It All Back combination while working on timing, listening, clear sounds, and keeping the beat.

✨ Jazz

Jazz is where we get to add a little personality! Dancers will groove, bounce, jump, and explore isolations before traveling across the room with grapevines and gallops. We'll also start learning our Jazz Square and a fun combination where dancers can begin adding their own performance style. We're working on coordination, musicality, energy, and confidence.

💕 What We're Developing

Throughout this unit, dancers are building coordination, balance, musicality, memory, body awareness, spatial awareness, and confidence. They're also learning how to listen, follow directions, work together, and remember movement patterns—all while discovering that each style of dance asks their bodies to move in a different and exciting way!

Ballet • Tap • Jazz

We’re kicking off the year by building on the skills dancers already know and helping them become stronger, more confident dancers! During Unit 1, dancers are reviewing important foundations, learning new vocabulary, and beginning to put their skills together into combinations. We’re focusing on clean technique, musicality, coordination, and—most importantly—helping dancers feel successful and excited to move!

🩰 BALLET

We’re getting back into our ballet routine with a combination of barre work, traveling steps, and center exercises! Dancers will revisit their pliés and tendus while beginning to work more with passé, sautés, and fifth position. Across the floor, we’ll practice turns, polka, chassé, and traveling movements while focusing on balance, spotting, posture, and control. We’re slowing things down when needed so dancers can really understand their technique before adding more complexity.

👞 TAP

Tap is all about building strong rhythms and making clear, confident sounds! Dancers will review familiar tap skills while working on shuffles, weight changes, step combinations, and traveling patterns. We’ll continue developing their ability to stay on the beat, listen to the music, and coordinate their feet with their bodies. As dancers become more comfortable with the basics, we’ll begin adding speed and putting steps together into longer combinations.

🎷 JAZZ

Jazz is where dancers get to bring energy and personality to their movement! We’ll work on isolations, grooves, traveling steps, and turns while building stronger coordination and body control. Dancers will practice moving with purpose through space and begin connecting their jazz vocabulary into combinations. We’re working on musicality, clean movement, confidence, and learning how to really perform what they’re dancing!

⭐ WHAT WE’RE DEVELOPING

Throughout Unit 1, dancers are building:

Coordination • Balance • Musicality • Body Awareness • Memory • Spatial Awareness • Listening Skills • Technique • Movement Vocabulary • Confidence • Performance Quality • Independence

Finding the Beat • Groove • Bounce • Confidence

This unit is all about helping our young dancers discover what makes hip hop unique—the music, the groove, and their own individual style! Dancers will first learn how to listen to the beat, move naturally with the music, and develop confidence in their movement.

Throughout the unit, dancers will explore bounce, groove, isolations, basic hip hop footwork, traveling movements, and freezes while beginning to understand important musical concepts like the downbeat and finding the pocket. They'll also practice moving through space, remembering short combinations, and making their own movement choices.

Most importantly, we're encouraging dancers to feel the music, express their personalities, and celebrate their own style while learning to support and encourage their classmates.

🎵 At Home Conversation Starter:

Ask your dancer: “Can you show me your favorite groove? You may just get a mini hip hop performance in your living room! ⭐

***Only Tutu Level & Starlet Level classes are included in our monthly newsletters. Prima Level students should be able to articulate/demonstrate what they have been learning in class. If you have any class related questions, please do not hesitate to speak with your student's teacher. ***
